Maisie Jane’s…In a Nutshell
Growing up in fourth generation almond farming family in Chico, Maisie Jane Bertagna-Hurtado quickly caught on to what seemed a problem in the almond industry. She listened in on conversations between her Grandfather, father, and uncles discussing the fact that California almonds were primarily exported and not being marketed and processed to their full capability here in California and the rest of the country.
With her family’s wise words in mind and Maisie’s love for agriculture, good food, and having a passion for keeping farming alive, Maisie Jane’s California Sunshine Products was born. Her business, in fact, started in 1993 at age 17 and was a FFA project in High school.
Maisie Jane’s processes a diverse line of over twenty different almond products using her family’s and other local almond grower’s crops. All products are oven roasted and all natural. In 2003 they introduced their new product line of Certified Organic Sliced Almond Delights; which are fabulous on salads or just snacking!
Maisie Jane’s sells to grocery stores nation-wide… primarily to health food stores and to the gift & gourmet markets. They also have an adorable gift shop located in Chico at 1324 Dayton Road in Chico where you can pick up beautiful gift baskets and find a large assortment of other locally grown and made products.
When Maisie Jane’s asked what she likes the most about being in business the reply is not short. “Family’s first! I’ve been blessed with the opportunity of working with my mother and aunt in the gift shop, my father and brother when purchasing the almonds, and now my husband runs the production facility. It’s a great environment. The Chico area has been a very supportive community to start and run a business in. It’s just been so exciting to watch the business grow and evolve, and rewarding to think that the nation’s snacking on wholesome almonds that are grown and made right her in Chico, my back-yard my whole life!”

Our Review:
Woah! Talk about a DELICIOUS company to review! My favorite kind of nut butter is Cashew butter and Jared's is Chocolate Hazelnut. Lucky for us, they sent us BOTH of them to review and they DID NOT DISAPPOINT! They were so creamy and tasty! We definitely enjoyed the almond butter as well. We put it in our oatmeal, on toast, and on top of our baked oatmeal treats! SO GOOD. The nuts they gave us to try had spices and they rocked! It was nice to have some flavor on them for a snack or in addition to our lunches. They were so flavorful and yummy! Our favorite flavor out of the three was the Country Garlic and Herb.

Please visit their website and order something for yourself! They have TONS of delicious and nutritious options.

MAISIE JANE’S CALIFORNIA SUNSHINE PRODUCTS TEAMS WITH WHOLE FOODS MARKETS, UC
DAVIS AND XERCES FOUNDATION TO “SAVE OUR BEES”
Portion of Maisie Jane’s™ Almond Butter Sales Being Donated to Native Bee Population Research and
Conservation
Chico CA, October 18, 2013 Maisie Jane’s™ drives nationwide effort to fund research and solutions regarding the decline of native bee populations.
Maisie Jane’s™ in Chico, CA is a 4th generation family owned and operated grower, processor and packer of fresh, top tier almonds and value added nut products. Very keen to the important role bees play in the pollination of multiple U.S. food crops, Maisie Jane implements bee friendly methods in her company’s own almond growing practices.
“We have planted a special flower mixture in our orchards that offer additional honey bee food in an effort to increase the native honey bee population in our orchards”, explains Maisie…“The bee hives which we bring in to assist with our almond pollination are local hives…not freighted across the country to arrive at our farm. This means the carbon footprint is lessened, but more importantly this is one factor that contributes to the health and vitality of the hives. It is believed that hives moved over long distances are more susceptible to disease and are weakened as colonies because of the stress of travel and the drastic change of their surroundings.”
Maisie Jane’s™ has agreed to donate $25,000 to the Portland OR based Xerces Foundation which protects wildlife through the conservation of invertebrates and their habitat. Additionally, Maisie Jane’s™ is working with the Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility at UC Davis - the largest and most comprehensive state‐supported apiculture facility in North America… and the only one of its kind in California. Their expertise includes honey bee breeding and genetics and native bee biology. They are uniquely qualified to investigate declining populations of honey bees, native bees and other insect pollinators… and ultimately find solutions.
Beginning in August, 2013, Whole Foods Markets began selling specially labeled Maisie Jane’s™ “Save Our Bees” Natural Almond Butter in all retail locations nationwide. Until at least August 2014, 5 cents for every jar sold will be donated to the UC Davis Honey Bee Research Facility.
Maisie affirms, “Native bees have brought and continue to bring so much to our lives and livelihood, in so many ways… It’s definitely in everyone’s utmost interest that we invest in helping them survive and flourish as best we can.”
